Switching to a Paleo diet from a standard American diet is one of the best things you can do for your health. If you cut out all the processed foods, grains, and sugary treats, you will most likely find yourself losing some weight and feeling healthier and more energized.
For some people that’s not enough to get them to their optimal weight and dream body. If you have switched to a Paleo diet, but still aren’t seeing the results you were hoping for, then this article is for you. I will discuss the three critical things you need to do in order to lose weight on a Paleo diet.
To lose weight on a Paleo Diet, you need to focus on these 3 things.
1. Eat enough fat.
Unfortunately some people still have a fear of fat.
Healthy fats, like coconut oil, olive oil, avocados, fats from wild fish and grass-fed beef are not only healthy for you, but are KEY to optimal health and losing weight. Our hormones need adequate amounts of fat to function. And we need our hormones to be working great if we are wanting to stay slim and trim.
A lot of people switch to a Paleo diet and take out the grains, breads and pastas, but forget that they need to replace those carbs with healthy fats, protein and better sources of carbohydrates like veggies and fruits. They might see a drastic weight loss at first because they are actually eating too little, but then the weight loss stalls because they are not getting enough nutrients and it is causing their metabolism to slow down.
2. Workout SMART.
Sometimes working out is not enough. You need to workout the best and smartest way for optimal fat burning and increasing your metabolism.
This would be a combination of short intense strength training sessions, and high intensity interval training. This is how I stay fit by only working out about an hour per week, just like I recommend in my Fit Mom Blueprint program.
Strength training increases your lean muscle mass, therefore making you burn more calories throughout the day. It also helps with metabolizing sugars and carbohydrates, which is super important for maintaining energy and using the food you eat for fuel instead of it being stored on your body as fat.
HIIT (high-intensity-interval-training) or sprinting, is going to help scorch body fat FAST. And you only need to do this once a week!
3. Know your optimal carbohydrate window.
This is the magic piece of the puzzle to effortlessly lose weight while eating Paleo.
It gets confusing to know what and how much to eat. Some people think they need to cut out all carbs including fruits and potatoes. This can be problematic sometimes because carbohydrates (especially after a workout) are very important for building muscle, which in turn helps you lose fat.
Most people (who eat a typical standard American diet) consume upwards of 200-300 carbohydrates a day! It is so easy to eat this much if you are consuming bread, pastas, sodas etc. If you stay in this zone for long, you can expect to be obese and unhealthy.
For a maintenance zone, eating 100 to 150 carbohydrates is a good range to be in. This is probably where you would naturally fall if you are just eating as much as you want on a Paleo diet.
So… what is the magic number for weight loss?
For a safe and steady fat burning zone, you want to try to keep your carbohydrates in the range of 50-100 grams a day (or if you are breastfeeding it will be slightly more).
If you want a really easy way to help you keep track of your daily carbohydrate content and stay within your limit, my Fit Mom Blueprint program comes with specially designed charts based on a Paleo diet.
